Everything you ever wanted to know about CBO and then some.
This is an excellent book with an encyclopedia-like approach to Oracle performance tuning, concentrated around the optimizer. It doesn't cover architectural changes in the database in the newer releases, like the new redo mechanism with the private strands or the new implementation of the latches and pins. In my opinion, Oracle performance is more than just the optimizer. Also, the book is very long and without the sections for new features in 12c, which makes it rather hard to read for those interested primarily in the new features of 12c. It is also very useful as an encyclopedia, but very hard to read from cover to cover, which is what I did.Having said that, it is also the most complete description of the Oracle optimizer available. An alternative title could be "all about the Oracle optimizer in one place". The book is very useful and a must have for any Oracle DBA interested in performance.

Tony has provided a practical and proven method for tuning Oracle databases. Should be on all your Oracle bookshelves.
Stability. As Oracle professionals we strive for stability on a daily basis in our databases. One of the key components of stability is performance. How can we guarantee that an SQL statement which performed well today will run well tomorrow? How can we state to our managers and customers that their application will perform consistently? The answers to these questions, and more, are contained in this book. With Oracle performance it is not enough to just read the Oracle performance manuals and blog posts. This book takes a deep dive into the internals of the Oracle Cost Based Optimizer. While at the same time presenting complex topic in a clear and understandable way.I highly recommend this book to any Oracle professional involved in performance tuning. I have witnessed Tony utilize the strategies in this book and turn an extremely non-performant database into a stable and predictive one. This held true for the database after a major platform upgrade from 10.2 to 11.2 RAC. If you were as frustrated and discouraged as I was trying to tune Oracle databases then this book is for you.

I have been fortunate to attend some of Tony's presentations at the UKOUG Tech Conferences and so expected this book to be of the same quality. I was not disappointed! Tony really does have a deep insight into the subtleties of the Oracle database and the information in this book will be useful to DBAs of all levels of experience. I really do like the method of proof by example, and I wish more popular Oracle experts would follow the same philosophy. I found this book very readable, whilst still being informative. The examples given are also relavant to the real world. I am sure all readers will find some part of this book where they can say, 'Well I didn't know that!'.

Great book for real world cases
This book is a great benefit for any developer who deals with real world problems. To many books diagnose theoretical or issues which you cannot relate to. Tony takes real examples and applies real solutions to them. Already I have implemented benefits of the pagination topics as well as correctly diagnosed several co-workers on SORT AGGREGATE

Highly recommended
Packed full of useful information; every chapter contains something to benefit even the more experienced developer. The author clearly knows his subject matter extremely well, and has that rare ability to convey it in a way that can be understood rather than followed mechanically.Roger - Oracle developer since v4 (1984)
