Scoop-Free & Stress-Free: The Easiest Way to Handle Cat Litter!
The PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro is a self-cleaning litter box that takes care of the dirty work for you. After your cat uses it, the box automatically rakes the waste into a covered compartment—no scooping needed! It uses special crystal litter that absorbs odors and dries out the poop, so your home smells fresh. The litter is low-dust and doesn’t track everywhere, which keeps your floors cleaner. You only need to change the tray every few weeks, making it super convenient. However, the disposable trays can be a bit expensive over time, especially if you have more than one cat. Most cats get used to it quickly, but some might not like the feel of the crystals. It’s also a bit large, so make sure you have enough space.

Lasts a long time if you maintain it - years of use!
I bought one of these a few years ago and after about 3 years it started to get stuck and just smelled terrible even after cleaning it. I was using the single-use crystal litter trays during that time. First one finally gave out so I bought a new one. This new one is going to last me an even longer time because I found a good cleaning and refill method. I use the washable/reusable tray you can buy separately made by PetSafe. I don’t use the blue crystal litter, instead I buy the brand Pretty Litter because it lasts 2x longer and keeps the mechanical parts cleaner. This litter box works exactly the same with the Pretty Litter, so no worries there. To make the soiled litter easy to dispose I double layer 2 Jonny Cat Litter Liner bags on the reusable tray, then reload more Pretty Litter. The cats never puncture through both liner bags so there's never a mess. I have one box for 2 cats and only have to change it about once a month/3 weeks. They've always used 1 litter box since kittens so it's never been an issue. Cats hated it at first but got used to it quickly. If you want it to last you MUST clean it entirely between litter changes. What I do is remove the top-entry part and wipe it down with a pet-safe all purpose cleaner (I use Mrs. Meyers). Then flip the actual litter box upside down to wipe everything including the rake and entire bottom. Afterward I'll turn it right-side up and wipe down the top as well. Everything gets wipes down. This cleaning routine + the Pretty Litter keeps the litter box clean for years of use. Entire cleaning/refill routine takes less than 5 minutes, which is SO worth it compared to sifting litter every day. Absolutely recommend. Worth it if you ask me!

Rake broken in 4 months, FRUSTRATED
Updated review: 11/28/25- just purchased in July 2025, the rake continues to get stuck throwing the red error light and causes the feces not getting raked. The track is clearly broken. Having to attend to this thing 4x-6x a day to try and correct the broken rake, to help stop the poop piling in one place and cleaning. I am beyond frustrated. The litter box is new and still looks new but broken. Also, This is Not so “Self Cleaning” this box rakes and then pushes feces into a very small trench that is hidden under a portion of the cover. It starts to smell VERY FAST so you have to scoop it out the trench towards the front of the box to ensure it doesn’t smell and not overloaded. This is no different than using a regular litter box, scooping it to the front and using something to cover the poop area with so it’s not visible. That’s all this does is momentarily hide the poop. Waste of money, especially since the replacement liners are so pricey. Don’t be like me and get this, get one that automatically puts litter in a bag you just grab and toss and one that has a separate compartment area keeping the feces fully from the clean area.

Takes some time but overall it's great
My husband and I decided to get a new cat litter box that was self cleaning because my cat was getting older and due to a disability having a hard time using the bathroom. We wanted to be able to not only monitor him constantly but allow him to have a clean stress free bathroom experience. When the cat litter box arrived it was very easy to put together and could be used right away. I ended up ripping the tray due to confusing instructions but it was easily fixed. My cat refused to use the new box for 2 days due to anxiety. I feel most people would of returned it but I decided to try and train him to use it. The first thing I did was put it in the same spot as his old litter box and put the old litter box next to it. Everytime he used his old box, I would pick him up and put him in the new one litter box. He hated it. I knew then that he needed some positive encouragement. I began leaving treats along the edge of the new box. He would sit in the box, eat his treats and run away. I then had some extra petsafe crystal litter and mixed that with his clay litter 50/50. He understood now that the crystal litter was ok to potty in. The second day after using the 50/50 litter, getting treats and positive encouragement, I took his old box and put it away so he couldn't use it. After him being scared of the new box, he finally decided to urinate in the new litter box. I immediately gave him treats and positive encouragement. He LOVES his new box. He has used it almost 20 times and he loves to run over and watch it clean up his mess. He will literally run across the house and it's adorable. It doesn't smell and it's great. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars is the tray and the top entry cover. I really feel as though the instructions should of been more clear and I think the price for a permanent tray is very overpriced. Also the top entry cover has too far or a drop from the inside for my cat. He is too scared to do the drop and the entry is right on top of the scoop mechanic. I fear he would land on it and hurt himself or the litter box. An a side note, another advice i saw online for cats having a hard time using crystal litter, was to try Pretty Litter because the crystals aren't as big and it's more like clay litter. It IS SAFE for this litter box as stated on the Pretty Litter website. Good luck on training your cats to love this box and don't give up hope right away.

Perfect for Picky Cats & Dog-Proof — 6 Years Strong
We purchased our first PetSafe unit in 2019. When a 2nd kitty joined our household in 2023, we added another one because the first had already proven itself over 6 years of daily use. ✅ Highlights: • First unit operating reliably since 2019 • 2nd unit added in 2023 for our 2nd cat • Consistent rake cycle and sensor detection • Compatible with reusable litter trays • Covered design keeps dogs out After 6 years, the original unit is still cycling properly with no motor replacement, cracked housing, or sensor issues. That reliability made the decision easy when we needed a 2nd box. 🐱 Litter Adjustment: Our 2nd cat completely rejected the crystal litter that typically comes with this system and is especially sensitive to litter texture and moisture levels. This was not an issue with the machine itself, but simply her personal preference. Instead of replacing the box, we switched both units to Pretty Litter. The transition was seamless. The rake system continued cycling properly, there were no sensor errors, and no clumping interference. Both cats now use the boxes daily without hesitation. We also moved from disposable trays to reusable inserts to reduce waste and long-term cost. The reusable trays fit correctly, do not interfere with the rake mechanism, and rinse clean in just a few minutes. The covered hood design has been especially important in our mixed-pet home. It prevents our dogs from accessing the litter and keeps the surrounding area cleaner overall. ⛔️ Cons: • Higher upfront investment • Requires occasional deep cleaning around the rake housing • Larger footprint than a standard litter pan 🔄 Update: As of 2025, the original 2019 unit has reached 6 years of consistent daily use and is still running properly. The 2023 unit performs just as reliably. Because our 2nd cat prefers very dry litter, we added a small dehumidifier near the boxes to help control humidity in our lower-level space. This was purely to accommodate her preference and not due to any defect or malfunction of the litter box. Since adding it, litter texture stays consistent and both units continue functioning normally. Dehumidifier used: https://a.co/d/0043W4yC ⭐ Final Thought After owning the first for 6 years and purchasing a 2nd when our family grew, I would confidently buy again. The durability has justified the investment in our home.

Works as advertised but at a price
I purchased this box instead of the litter robot 4 because at face value it is significantly less expensive. The box and a 3 pack of refills set me back $270 instead of the $700 of the more advanced unit. And I have no problem with how the petsafe scoopfree performs. It works as advertised with very little effort. The rake handles solid waste reasonably well though pieces occasionally stick to it. It is certainly better than daily scooping and both my cat and I have been enjoying the clean and mostly odor free box. My main complaint is with those refills. Petsafe advertises them as lasting one month for one cat and 2 weeks for 2 cats. This simply is not true. I grant that all cats are different and general statements are never likely to be completely accurate to every situation but the one month claim is a gross exaggeration. I have one cat. He is a year old, and slightly larger than average at 14 lbs. He eats one cup of blue buffalo dry food per day and I give him a treat before and after I go to work. I have gone through two refills in just under one month. At that rate you will have paid the same for the petsafe and it's refils as the fancy schmancy litter robot4 in about 11 months. And that is with the refills on sale at $70 after tax for a 3 pack which is what I paid for mine. I've seen 3 packs as low as $50 on petco.com but you get the point. It adds up. After 2 weeks you will likely notice a smell. Not just immediately after your cat uses the box but pretty much continuously. The only thing covering the waste bin is a cardboard lid that isn't sealed and a plastic cover over that so the smell can get out if its strong enough. The crystals are supposed to dessicate the urine and dry the waste to prevent odor but they can only do so for a limited time. While I'm satisfied with the performance of the box, I would have waited and saved up for the more sustainable option had i known how many refills id need to buy. I recommend doing the math yourself based on prices you see and weigh the benefits of each system you're considering before taking the plunge.

Great litter box for a reasonable price!
It is not my first product from PetSafe that I actively use; that said, I decided to trust them again and they didn’t disappoint! It has been over a week since I have been using this new model of an automatic litter box. Generally saying, I was looking for a hands-free product that will do all-the-scooping for me with a conservative look of a litter box, and I indeed found it here. It was easy to assemble but if you have any difficulties, the guidance and manual with pictures are included. It is lightweight and modular, and I don’t think one will need to move it around often anyway. It is very very quiet, I can keep it in my bathroom without waking up at night ( I had this issue with a bigger rotating litter boxes). There is absolutely no smell that I could notice even if I try to sniff it out being very close. Amazing job on the litter filament itself, I would personally use only this one from now on. The top entrance option is perfect for my cat who gets pretty messy and tries to turn my bathroom into his sand playground. I found this product very user friendly and intuitive to use. My cat loves it and I would definitely recommend this one to my friends who practice pet sitting. Solid 5 stars!

I deleted my reminder to clean the litter!
First of all, this was super easy to set up (I didn't even have to look at the directions) and my cat took to it immediately! I put it together, walked out of the room, and when I came back she had already used it! I love that it keeps track of how many time she has used it so that I can be aware of her health and habits. There is no lingering odor (and she has some smelly poos)! This IS only two days in, but I have zero issues so far. I was even able to deleted my phone reminder to scoop the litter box. And, on top of all that, I will be saving money in the long run! I was using PrettyLitter, which was about $22/month ($264/year) and my cat would stop using her litter box about 3 weeks in (I was considering changing my delivery to every 3 weeks to prevent this $381/year). Even with the name brand replacement trays I'm looking at closer to $16/month ($192/year). So yes, the start up price is a bit high, but you will make your money back before you know it and reduce your stress. I will update my review should any of these things this change.
