can you release the bug without killing it

Unfortunately no the charge at the base kills the bug

Does the wide end come off? An end with a smaller hole in it would work best for picking up boxelder bugs.

Yes the wide end comes off, as well as the tubing. I am using it for Stink Bugs on a screened in porch mostly. I do not use the wide end, these bugs can really hang on. I sometimes push them loose and they vacuum right up.

Will it suck up stink bugs????

Yes it does, amazing. Make sure you continue to suck until they reach the bottom which kills them. If you do not they can crawl back out. Once they hit the bottom they are zapped. Rose
