How can you go about reviewing a set of printing inks? They either work or they don't, so its all really down to cost and quality. Most Epson products are pretty good, but in spite of regular maintenance, of the four printers I've owned in the XP 500 Series, each failed well within their guarantee period and all with the same flaw -- a reservoir pad that needed replacing -- usually at about £57, which is nearly as much as the cost than a complete new unit. Is that the life they are designed to have, I wonder? Bin it and get a new one , and with any of those comes a set of 'free' set up inks, albeit each with a special lowered capacity, so they run out in a week or so and you need to tin out yet again! You can attempt to change the pad yourself if you feel you're skilled enough, but its a VERY messy job that could so easily go wrong. Why don't Epson's technicians design a unit that'll improve the length its life of the unit because a flooded pad is an obvious regular flaw? Epson inks are a ridiculously high price, more expensive in fact than any fine lady might spend on the very best perfume, and more even than it costs to fill up my car with fuel. They put it down to the cost of long term development, but they've certainly got you by the short and curlys -- so what can you do?

I usually buy a set of alternative inks, which I find a very good and cost effective compared to the original Epson cartridges. The black had run out and so I bought this original cartridge. I have to say that it has a more intense darkness than the alternative I use, which looks pale in comparison.

These were delivered to me this morning but I’m not sure they are genuine Epsom cartridges as they came as individual ones, no Epsom packaging. I have bought them previously and they were in an Epsom box……..

Had to buy this to get my printer to work. Ridiculous price, not just for Epson, but for every printer make. I would happily take a tanker-load of printer ink instead of a lottery win, it has to be worth more..... It's about time that competition ombudsmen took a look at the situation with printer manufacturers. If Ford, for example, said that you had to use one specific make of petrol in your car, and did not allow it to start if you used a different brand, there would be hell to pay. I know Epson say that use of any other ink voids the warranty, but that is a choice that I would be making. Anyway, a new printer only costs around the same as a pack of genuine inks, so no great deal if they wouldn't honour the warranty. I have to say that the inks work very well, and I am very happy with the results from the printer, I always have been with Epson products, but the handcuffs they insist on you wearing are too restrictive, and are very unfair, perhaps if challenged, even illegal. Epson don't even have the decency to reply when I contacted them about this point. They got my money, and will continue to do so, if I want to use the machine. Customer service? None......

Man muss es einfach sagen, wie’s ist: Druckerpatronen sind unverschämt teuer. Da fragt man sich manchmal, ob man bald anfangen muss, alte Familienschmuckstücke zu verpfänden, nur um weiter Dokumente auszudrucken. Klar, ich habe auch schon günstigere Alternativen ausprobiert. Die waren preislich attraktiv, aber leider oft auch ein Abenteuer: Schlieren, Fehldrucke, Tintenchaos – das volle Programm. Mit den Originalpatronen? Keine Probleme. Drucken, wie es sein soll. Scharf, sauber, zuverlässig. Und ja, natürlich weiß jeder, dass Druckerhersteller nicht mit dem Drucker selbst verdienen, sondern mit dem, was danach kommt: den Patronen. Kein Wunder, dass es inzwischen Abo-Modelle gibt, bei denen der Drucker selbstständig Tinte nachordert. Fehlt eigentlich nur noch, dass er einen Einkaufszettel schreibt. Fazit: Teuer, aber gut. Und solange günstigere Patronen öfter Ärger als Ersparnis bringen, greife ich eben doch wieder zur Originalware – auch wenn es sich ein bisschen so anfühlt, als würde man Tinte in Gold aufwiegen.
