Very usefull flameless lighter/fire starter
Excellent price. Functions as I expected, and the design is excellent - do note the instructions are in Chinese - but I did not need them. I bought 1, primed (charred) the rope first, and it worked like a champ. Past tense, because I got the bright (bad) idea to try a slightly larger longer flint with the idea it would last longer. It jammed. Totally my fault. So I tried to pry the striking wheel tabs out a bit to pop the flint out from that end with a thin wire - and one tab broke off. The device is cast from some silvery metal, it's not brass/bronze. The break is granular like 'pot metal' - if it had been brass, I could have soldered it back on. What I should have tried to fix my 'bright idea' would have been to pop the pin out, remove the stuck flint and re-pin the wheel. Because I like the device - and broke it, I bought 2 more. I may be able to craft a repair on the first one - but my mistake reminded me of the adage, 2 is one and one is none, why I bought 2 more, which also work fine. They come with a neat little pouch, and I plan on adding a container of spare flints to ea pouch. It would be nice if this seller also offered spare ropes - other sellers on Amazon sell them.

Nice quality and minimal parts to lose!
The other styles of this lighter have a small ball on a hook to snuff out the ember on the rope, whereas this one as a flip cap. In my opinion this cap was a major improvement to the design. I had the other style and the ball would often come loose and was eventually lost. I also like the little wheel to push the rope up, feels better than other designs and works well. Don't forget to singe the tip of the rope you intend to light, as a regular spark will not catch the rope properly because charcoal has such a low flash point.

Extremely hard to re rope
Works great for lighting and quick un igniting but getting new rope past the wheel is a pain. Even smaller hemp rope has a problem. I think the ball and hooks are easier to re-string.

My 3rd Lighter In A Year!
These lighters are great. Awhile back I Bought 1 for myself, then one for a family member. Now I just bought a 3rd to have a second one on hand and to store in a different location. I heard bad reviews about the ones with a ball. I didn't want to bother with setting a hook on the ball to the cord every time or when it needs adjusting. A hinged flip top is the way to go! Puts out the coal in seconds! I am a survival expert (40 plus years) and know more then most schools that focus on physical skills only that run schools). A few tips (and I know everyone probably knows to char the end first with a lighter or a flame), Tip number... 1. Extend your cord level with striker wheel and then push it towards the flint and wheel so that it can easily catch a spark (shown in photo). 2. In survival you can probably make natural cordage and twist and double to right size and char the end. Best would probably be cedar cordage, yucca, milkweed, nettle, dogbane, hemp, and any other natural plants or barks that are used in fire by friction methods. 3. Even better then natural cordage in a survival situation is when you are low on rope or out of rope, pre-char natural chunks of cedar and/or tinder fungus, coal mushroom, or charga to the right size that will stick in the end of tube and be up high enough to catch a spark. Tinder fungus and charga can be cut up and charged using all the mushroom. Also remember that many other shelf mushrooms have an amadou layer that can be charged whether you know the name of the mushroom or not. And other ants such as cattail heads, etc can be charged and used, just take a stick size of tube, push it up through tube, and pile on some charred cattail head (or other natural char material from plants), on the end of stick and spark. Hope all this helps. God bless and good luck. All good medicine Michael / sacredsurvival.us (coming soon).

Cool functionality
Works fine. Wouldn't want to rely on this technology in an emergency.

Good product
A lot of people misunderstand the purpose of these. These are only really good for lighting cigarettes and other tobacco products, or paper. Don't expect to light any candles with these. I would buy one again. Solid construction, and quality rope.

It does what it is designed to. It is ok quality but it could be better. Don't forget to pre-char the rope before using the lighter.
