Cherry 'Summer Sun' is a reliable variety that has a reasonably compact growth habit, which means it can easily be trained against a wall or left to grow naturally. Bumper crops of delicious dark red fruits are produced each July, giving you tasty fruits to eat fresh from picking or to add to desserts. 'Summer Sun' copes particularly well with the ever-changing UK climate. This variety is not self-fertile, which means that in order to produce the highest yields it should be grown alongside another variety that can act as a pollination partner. If you are limited for space and don't have room for two trees, this could be a neighbour's tree. Cherry trees can be ed in any well-drained soil as long as it is in a sheltered, sunny position. Before ing, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the ing hole and drive a stake into the ground for support. Never stake after ing, as this can cause damage to the tree's root ball. If you are growing a cherry tree on the patio, use a large 60cm (24") diameter container and fill it with a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
